La Indita de Manuel Maes

Rob Martinez and his brother Lorenzo recorded an album, Los Martinez: Herencia, which refers to their Hispano heritage or heredity. The Martinezes have lost two sisters to breast cancer. This particular song, Rob says, is an indita from the 1800s. The lyrics tell of a New Mexican named Manuel Maes who died in an accident while hunting buffalo. Maes was impaled on his lance, his horse covered with his blood. Before dying he says goodbye to his parents and his girlfriend. Inditas were songs combining Spanish and Indian rhythms and melodies. I think I also hear the sad strains of Sephardic Jews.
